Insane Goalkeeper Score Wins for Boston Bruins
On Saturday night in Vancouver, Linus Ullmark was the Boston Bruins‘ top performer. He also contributed to some Black and Gold history.
Ullmark scored a very uncommon goalkeeper goal in the last minute of play at Rogers Arena to defeat the Canucks 3-1 despite the Canucks withdrawing their goalie in a one-goal game. Ullmark retrieved a dump attempt and flicked a puck high into the air that fell in the Canucks net.
Connor Garland sent the ball in, and it deflected off Brock Boeser’s stick before landing to the side of the Boston goal where Ullmark was waiting.
It seemed fitting that Ullmark’s first goal of his career came in a game when he stood on his head while saving 26 of 27 shots in the win, and in a season where the Swedish goalkeeper has established himself as the No. 1 goalie and a favorite to win the Vezina Award.
In a move that never fails to delight hockey fans, it was also the first goalkeeper goal in Boston Bruins history and the ninth goal by an NHL goaltender in league history.
“He decided to take matters into his own hands there at the end. It was incredible to see,” said Brad Marchand to NESN after the game. “It was a lot of fun to see. It just adds to a phenomenal year for Linus Ullmark.”
Also, it comes almost two months after Ullmark came close to scoring in the third period of the Winter Classic victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins and after he dazzled everyone with his impressive puck-throwing skills during the NHL All-Star Skills Competition in Florida earlier this month.
Ullmark’s goal came just moments after the Boston Bruins goalie made several crucial saves in the third period, including one on Anthony Beauvillier with a clear shot at the Boston net and another on Elias Petterson on a smooth give-and-go play, as Boston was barely holding onto a one-goal lead over the Canucks. The Boston Bruins appeared to be out of steam towards the conclusion of the third period against the Canucks, and it is obvious that Ullmark was playing it clutch in every aspect as their goalie.
